Sinatra’s Notes

THANK YOU to everyone who honored me last weekend with your love and affection. I honestly didn’t know what was coming. It all hit me by wonderful surprise. I knew there would be a reception in the church hall. As the week progressed our hall was transformed into a veritable night club, chandelier and all. The food, music, service by many volunteers were more than I anticipated. Thank you.
I HADN’T PLANNED on a formal retirement party. I dragged my feet at first on mailing invitations. Some were sent from the parish. Then the word spread that led to an unexpected attendance of more than 500 persons. My first realization of a surprising turn out was a packed house in church for the 11:30 Mass. I confess that I wasn’t prepared emotionally for that. Thank you everyone for coming.
NO SURPRISE in any of it for Sister Mary. As usual, her sharp eye for organization, personal attention to every detail, an ability to get volunteers, even contributions enough to cover expenses once more became evident. There was ample food because she had prepared for the possible unexpected. Her energy prevailed. She even danced a polka with one of my cousins.
I AM DEEPLY HUMBLED by everyone’s love and affection. I will treasure the memory of you and of our good times together always. God bless you with His peace and joy!

Blessed Alan de la Roche was born in the Brittany area of France and from his earliest years had a great love and devotion to the Virgin Mary. He entered the Dominican Order and soon won a reputation as a brilliant student. After being ordained a priest, he was assigned to promote devotion to both the Virgin Mary and the Rosary. He preached in France, Belgium, Denmark and Holland.
While working in Holland, he was taken ill on the Feast of the Assumption and died there on the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin, September 8, 1475. We celebrate the Feast of St. Alan on October 26.
